Hands shaping a clay vessel on a banding wheel

Handicraft · ◦ Viña del Mar

Ceramics

Two mornings to come at ceramics through the process: to know the material, build a piece of your own, and understand everything that happens before it reaches the fire.

We work in a small group across two consecutive mornings.

Each session begins around the table, with breakfast and a short introduction to the part of the process we are about to explore. Then we move to the clay, following each project closely and respecting the time every piece needs.

The first day is given to understanding the material and beginning to build. The second, to continuing the piece, working its finishes, and coming closer to the world of glazes and surfaces.

The experience ends, but the piece goes on. Each work stays in the workshop for about a month to finish drying, firing and taking the chosen finish before it is handed over.

Come as you are. Every run of this is taught from zero, whatever you already know.

The run itself

Day 109:30 — 13:00

Material and building

We begin around the table with breakfast, samples, images and an introduction to the ceramic process. Then we look at the projects and move to the clay, shaping the first stage of each piece and learning to recognise its possibilities, its limits and its timings.

Day 209:30 — 13:00

Surface and finish

The second morning opens with breakfast and a short introduction to glazes, colour and the different ways of finishing. Then we return to each project to complete its building, work its details and surfaces, and decide how the piece will carry on through the stages that follow.
